TRANSPORTATION

In many of the northern coastal areas one does not have to have a car! In addition to the wonderful railroad and pleasant walkways, there are the bus, group taxi van (sherut), and the regular taxi.  Both train and bus offer various discount tickets and monthly passes. The sheruts also offer a rechargeable discount card.   Train stations are in Naharia, Ako, Qiryat Motzkin, and Qiryat Haim. Naharia is the northern most rail station, so living in Shlomi or Rosh haNikra would require use of other types of transport.

Naharia: The rail station, bus station, sherut stand, and taxi stand are conveniently located, very close to one another.  However, you may not need any of them; within Naharia, many people choose to walk.  The city is lovely and the sidewalks are spacious and well-kept.  In many areas, there are bike paths next to the sidewalks, so bicycling is another option.

When public transport is desired, the choices are many.  Both Egged and Nateev operate out of the Central Bus Station.  Egged provides inter-city service.  Nateev provides service intra-city, to surrounding villages, and to some towns farther away. Their rates are very reasonable and they are one of three bus-lines in Israel that allow use of a rechargeable discount card.

If one is not fond of the bus, group taxis (sheruts)  provide service to Haifa and some of the other surrounding cities. Their rates are vary reasonable.  Rates for regular taxi service within the city are uniform and a very good value - currently at 13nis.

Many of us find travel by train very much to our liking.  As with other public trasport, the rates are reasonable.  Since Naharia is the location of the northern most rail station, one will never accidentally board a train going the wrong direction, and one will always find a good seat.  Also, when coming home, if one takes a nap, there is no chance of missing one's stop.   Very easy to live without a car.

The Qrayot: There are two train stations - Qiryat Motzkin and Qiryat Haim.  Several Egged bus routes travel through and/or within the Qrayot.  Both sherut (group taxis), and regular taxis, are readily available.  Sheruts  provide service to Naharia, Ako, and Haifa. Easy to live without a car.

Ako: Egged operates out of the Central Bus Station, providing inter-city and intra-city service.  Sheruts  provide service to Naharia, the Qrayot, Haifa, and some of the inland towns.  Easy to live without a car.

Shlomi: There are no rail stations, but Nateev and Egged buses serve Shlomi.  On average there is a bus to Naharia about every 30 minutes. The bus ride between Shlomi and Naharia takes between 13 and 23 minutes (depending on the particular bus route).  From Naharia it is easy to get other transportation to anywhere in the country.  Shlomi is also served by group taxis (sherut) and regular taxis.  Possible to live without a car.
